The author himself tells about his own struggles and how he once took some time off from society. Krakauer strays a bit from McCandless's story, to tell about other people who decided to take similar paths as Christopher. The book was adapted to film in 2007, directed by Sean Penn with Emile Hirsch starring as McCandless (Christopher Johnson McCandless 1968 - 1992, a young, and wise man left his family and friends and headed off into the wilderness). That being said, the middle to end of the book was a bit disappointing. Into the Wild is a 1996 non-fiction book written by Jon Krakauer. The reader finds this out at the beginning of the book though, so it's really not a spoiler for me to put it here. Christopher's story is fascinating, though it has a heart-breaking end. What makes a person decide to leave his family, his hopes of education, his whole life, to drop out of society? That is fascinating to me. Though McCandless discloses his intention to go to Alaska to the people he befriends. Krakauer spends the majority of the book documenting Chriss movements across the United States, Mexico, and finally Alaska. Along the way, he befriends many people, works, travels, but primarily keeps to himself and never speaks to his family again.
